WHAT IS OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING?

Weightlifting was first introduced to the Olympics in 1896 and has been a mainstay ever since. The two competition movements  are the snatch and clean & jerk, which are explosive exercises that require balancing strength, speed, coordination and flexibility.

Incorporating these exercises can provide a huge benefit to any gym goer or athlete. That's because these lifts allow you to train in a completely unique way when compared to other free weight exercises or machines, working on explosiveness through a large range of motion, testing your ability to coordinate your body, and learning to resist motion and change direction.

MEET YOUR COACH

Our weightlifting room is run by our in-house weightlifting coach, Matt Mills. Matt has multiple years of coaching experience in multiple sports.  Notably, he spent several years working as a sports analyst in Wales for the Welsh international field hockey team and attended the Commonwealth Games as part of their coaching staff. Since then, Matt has pursued his passion in Olympic Weightlifting and obtained his international weightlifting coaching qualifications in the UK, as well as becoming a certified Personal Trainer through ACE here in Canada.

Matt's background as an internationally recognized sports analyst means he has a specialized attention to detail method of coaching and excels in helping his students perfect their lifting technique. Matt has also personally spent several years training under Dylan Cooper, the owner of Dozer Weightlifting, one of the most successful USA remote coaching setups. This has been educational for Matt as a coach, but also helped him to improve his personal total by 50 kilos.
